John M. Esposito is the Chief of Fire Operations for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), overseeing the day-to-day work of more than 11,000 firefighters, fire officers and chiefs throughout New York City’s 5 Boroughs. He is a 32-year veteran of the FDNY, who has served in various capacities, including leading Rescue, Marine and Hazardous Material Operations as the Chief of the Special Operations Command.
The majority of his time as a Chief Officer was spent in mid-town Manhattan’s 9th Battalion and Manhattan’s 3rd Division where he was the incident commander for many large scale fires, high rise and other emergencies.
After joining the FDNY in 1991 and was assigned to Engine Company 324 in Queens and later worked as a firefighter in Engine Company 47 and Squad Company 18 in Manhattan, where he was involved in several technical rescue operations.
He was promoted to Lieutenant in March, 2001 and was assigned back to Squad 18 shortly after the 9/11 attacks
He has also served as the Intelligence and Analysis Section Chief at the FDNY’s Center for Terrorism and Disaster Preparedness and as a member of the National Fire Protection Association‘s (NFPA) High-Rise Building Safety Advisory Committee.
Chief Esposito holds a bachelor's degree from Stony Brook University and a master's degree in Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is a graduate of the FDNY’s Fire Officers Management Institute and is an Eagle Scout.
