Eric K Stern is Professor and elected Faculty Chair at the University at Albany (SUNY) College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security & Cybersecurity. Dr. Stern holds a BA degree from Dartmouth College and a Ph. D. from Stockholm University in Sweden. His research focuses on the political psychology and organizational foundations of decision-making, crisis and executive leadership, crisis informatics, community resilience and training and exercise design. Dr. Stern co-founded and subsequently was appointed Director of the Swedish National Center for Crisis Management Research and Training (CRISMART) at the Swedish Defense University, where he also served as Full Professor and Political Science Chair. He is currently a UAlbany Center for Technology in Government Faculty Fellow and was a 2022 FEMA Vanguard Leadership Fellow. Recent books include The Oxford Encyclopedia of Crisis Analysis (Oxford University Press, 2022, for which he served as Editor in Chief), Crisis Lawyering (New York University Press, 2021), and the American Political Science Association Herbert Simons Award-winning The Politics of Crisis Management: Public Leadership Under Pressure (2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2017). Dr. Stern is currently PI of EMPOWER, an extreme weather decision support project funded by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate and previously led the Swedish Country Team for EU ATHENA, a pan-European effort focusing on crowdsourcing social media data to support crisis decision-making. His career portfolio of externally funded research, applied education, and consulting includes a variety of grants and contracts from the State Department, NOAA, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the Council on State Government, RAND Corporation, several European Union Agencies and Research Programs, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency and Swedish Government Chancellery, the Swiss Government Chancellery, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare and the Korean National Diplomatic Academy, among others.
